PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The gunman who opened fire at a house party near Brown University’s campus last month, killing two Brown students and an MIT professor, had been planning the attack for several months, law enforcement officials said Tuesday.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Marcus Thompson of Providence, had been stockpiling weapons and ammunition since early spring, according to investigators who examined his search history and recent purchases.

The Attack

The shooting occurred on April 15 at a multi-family home just blocks from Brown’s campus. The victims were identified as:

  • Sarah Chen, 21, a Brown junior from California
  • David Martinez, 22, a Brown senior from Texas
  • Dr. Robert Williams, 45, an MIT physics professor attending the party

Thompson opened fire on the party of approximately 30 people around 11:30 p.m., according to police reports. He was apprehended by responding officers after a brief standoff.

Planning and Motive

Court documents reveal that Thompson had been researching mass shootings and acquiring firearms since February. His online search history included queries about “crowded venues,” “high-capacity magazines,” and “tactical gear.”

Investigators believe Thompson may have been motivated by personal grievances, though a clear motive has not been established. He had no prior criminal record but had recently been terminated from his job at a local software company.

Campus Response

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through both Brown University and MIT, which have been providing counseling services to students and faculty.

“We are heartbroken by this senseless violence,” said Brown University President Christina Paxson. “Our community is grieving, and we are doing everything we can to support our students during this difficult time.”

MIT President L. Rafael Reif called Dr. Williams “a brilliant physicist and beloved colleague” whose loss “leaves a void in our community that can never be filled.”

Gun Control Debate

The shooting has reignited debate over gun control laws in Rhode Island, where gun regulations are relatively permissive compared to other New England states.

Gov. Dan McKee (D) has called for stricter background checks and a ban on high-capacity magazines, while legislative leaders have promised to take up gun safety measures in the upcoming session.

Investigation Continues

Thompson is currently being held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston. He faces multiple charges including murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and illegal possession of firearms.

Federal authorities are also examining whether any hate crime charges are appropriate, though officials have not released details about Thompson’s potential motives.
